About The Engineers

Richard J. Pearson, P.E., ASHRAE Fellow

When Dick Pearson founded Pearson Engineering in 1986, he brought with him extensive experience gained through professional association with highly regarded firms in Wisconsin and ten other states. As the president of Pearson Engineering, Dick oversees projects from first schematics through final drawings. He has served as engineer-in-charge for a wide range of building, renovation and planning projects, and is skilled in both HVAC design and the execution of construction documents. His completed projects exhibit a sensitivity and understanding of function, scale, construction methodology, materials and ecological responsibilities. Dick Pearson’s strength lies in translating complicated client needs into outstanding design solutions. Through teaching, publishing, and membership in professional associations, he not only remains current with the direction of and the influences in the field of HVAC engineering, but contributes to its development and growth.

Much of Dick's career has been spent in hands-on analysis of the actual operation of HVAC systems. Before founding Pearson Engineering, Dick served as Chief Engineer on a Navy ship, and was a sales engineer for a major air conditioning manufacturer. Subsequently, he was a partner in a large HVAC and electrical design firm for 17 years, where he was responsible for large building designs, computer simulations, energy analysis, and commissioning activities provided by the firm.

Awarded the membership grade of Fellow for his pioneering work with building automation systems, Dick has received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). In ASHRAE, he has been Chairman of the Energy Management Committee, and has served on the Board of Directors, as well as serving on the Finance, Professional Development, TC 7.6, and Environmental Health committees, and the Technology Council.

Dick is a principal contributor to an ASHRAE publication “Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits” (2004). He is also a co-author of "Energy Use and Management" (Chapter 35) in the 2007 ASHRAE Handbook. He is co-author of "Homeowner's Guide to Energy Decisions," and has published a paper in ASHRAE Transactions on practical applications of rotary air-to-air heat exchangers. He has also collaborated with another consultant to develop a low temperature air distribution design guide for the Electric Power Research Institute.

Dick is a regular presenter at professional development courses at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere on subjects related to Energy Audits, HVAC design, energy management, system analysis, and renovation of buildings. ASHRAE has appointed Dick as a "Distinguished Lecturer," to facilitate presentations to ASHRAE chapters throughout the US.

As a member of the National Register of Peer Professionals, Dick has been selected by the Chief Architect of the General Services Administration to conduct peer reviews of GSA design projects for courthouses and similar projects.
