Analysis of Your Current System
It is very difficult to plot a route to reach a destination without knowing first where one is starting. That is why a clear, concise, precise and all-encompassing analysis of your current HVAC system is so crucial.
Using state-of-the-art test equipment and computer simulations, Pearson Engineering can pinpoint opportunities to improve system reliability and air quality, reduce noise and increase life safety and temperature control. We will explain all issues we discover in detail, offer solutions with evaluations of how these solutions will impact your project, all face-to-face and in written reports.
We've encountered several situations when a flawed initial analysis done by another company has created the perceived need for incredibly complex and expensive solutions. Some of our most shining success stories begin with a correct analysis and result in economical and relatively simple solutions.
Retrofitting
A retrofit project, larger and more involved than analysis and repair, is more like detective work than any other job in HVAC. Often, not only do you have to decipher what was built, when and how, but also why -- the "design intent." This always helps when designing the new system.
So before you begin remodeling, Pearson Engineering will analyze every aspect of your HVAC system, then brainstorm HVAC alternatives with you. In doing so, we often simplify -- and economize -- your system.
Acting as the Owner's Advocate
Pearson Engineering has served on many Design-Build teams, sometimes simply to develop starting-point concepts, often to lead the entire HVAC design effort. Up until recently, this was considered the ultimate in HVAC design.
Recently, we realized that Design-Build takes -- at most -- a cursory look towards the distant future. As the Owner's Advocate, however, we design systems so that five, 10, even 20 years down the line, the owner and service people have options when they need them. Again, this is tied to Value Engineering, as it places as much emphasis on the life-costs of a building as it does on the first-costs.
Master Planning
One of our most interesting jobs is serving as the HVAC Master Planner on "conceptual" projects. What are these? An example might be a university thinking about building needs 15 years from now. No land has been acquired, no budgets estimated; just some people with foresight looking towards the future. Pearson Engineering can advise on far-future projects because we stay current with the kinds of technologies in development and the impact they'll have down the road.
Commissioning Your System
Just as a new Navy ship is commissioned, Pearson Engineering commissions your system. This entails bringing your crew on board, training them in the new systems, testing and fine-tuning those systems, as well as the crew's ability to operate them. We test all aspects, components and their interaction. We thoroughly balance, fine-tune and adjust for optimum operation. We train your staff in all aspects of operation of the system. Finally, we provide follow-up monitoring and thorough documentation to ensure peak performance.
Digital Control
Complete and user-friendly control is the foundation of an efficient, comfortable and worry-free system. Microprocessors have revolutionized HVAC system controls, and Pearson Engineering has taken full advantage of the capabilities and benefits of these digital controls. These capabilities include -- but are by no means limited to -- programmable systems, "smart" systems, remote monitoring and reprogramming from virtually any location, alarms and messages that can be sent out over pagers, cell phones or land lines, and much more.
We begin by preparing detailed specifications of your building control system. We then help select contractors and oversee the installation. We can also monitor and assess your system's performance remotely, by modem, to ensure everything we designed and specified is operating at an optimum level.
Utility Cost-Savings and Environmental Stewardship
Immediate reductions in energy consumption -- and the attendant costs -- can be realized by adopting current energy-management techniques. It is estimated (using 2003 data from the Department of Energy) that by merely applying these techniques, the U.S. could have reduced its energy usage by 11%, nearly four times the energy produced by all renewable wind, solar and biomass sources combined. We believe environmental stewardship begins with energy conservation, and energy conservation begins with energy management.
Pearson Engineering has been providing Energy Management and Energy Conservation services to our clients for over 20 years. We document the results to ensure that our predicted savings are realized.
Dick Pearson has been continuously engaged in energy management and energy conservation in ASHRAE and is nationally recognized for his expertise in these areas.
Sick-Building Analysis
Sick Building Syndrome has been in the news a lot lately. Unfortunately, not all of the attention has been warranted. Nowadays, when people can't find a valid reason for some malady or health issue, they'll blame SBS. This is not to say SBS isn't a real issue; quite the contrary, more is known today about SBS than at any time in the past. Material outgassing, chemicals from hundreds of sources, dust, bacteria, molds, pollen and viruses are just some of the known contaminants that can cause SBS.
Pearson Engineering utilizes certified industrial hygienists to help us determine if SBS is, in fact, the issue, then identify the cause of your problem. From there, we'll concept, plan, cost out and offer practical solutions. We can often cure a sick building by improving the humidity, ventilation or temperature control.
Industrial Process
Our staff has, to use a colloquialism, been there and done that. From printing companies to food processing, from Navy ships to a commercial laundry, from a nuclear weapons research facility to a brewery, we have designed piping and ventilation systems to support all kinds of industrial process, and can support and improve your production environment.
Grants and Rebates
We work with utilities, performance contractors and government agencies to help you obtain rebates, low-interest loans, cost-sharing contracts, or grants.
Expert Witness Service
These are litigious times. It's just a fact of life and business. Pearson Engineering has used our precise processes, detailed analysis and thorough documentation to provide objective testimony in many legal matters. If you are ever in need of it, we can do the same for you.
Design/Build
Our method of design build is different than what most others do. We begin with good communications with the Owner, and write a detailed design intent, which includes sizing parameters and basic control logic. Single line schematics of all major HVAC systems are given to the bidders to help them understand our concepts. We find this design process “levels the playing field,” allowing the Owner to get accurate pricing.
We review the final design to ensure the Owner will get the intended HVAC system. Our extensive onsite experience helps us work with the contractor during construction to solve any problems quickly. The end of the project has the greatest impact on the Owner’s long term comfort and efficiency of the system, and we work with the control contractor and balance contractor to make sure each system is operating as intended. At the completion of functional testing, the Owner receives a document which contains sensor calibration information, initial setpoints, and a list of functional test procedures that have been checked and verified.
